In Amma’s ever-giving spirit, she asked that we make sure we give a portion of any proceeds to charity, so we plan to pick a deserving charity - likely in or near Amma’s home state of West Virginia - at the end of each year. And we wanted to have more excuses to spend time with our dear Amma at the same time, so we started Cooking with Amma.
Amma grandma how to#
We wanted to learn how to cook like Amma and share this joy with the world outside of our family. And we are always amazed how quickly Amma can throw these meals together. Yes, sometimes we even surprise ourselves when we say we want to eat Amma’s food instead of grabbing juicy Five Guys burgers. Radhamani is a shining example of an empowered woman and she has, reportedly, licence to drive vehicles across 11 categories, including like excavators, cranes and road rollers. Since she has been making our family food in the US for over 40 years, she has uniquely found a way to 1) get high-quality ingredients that we can never find in any of our local stores and 2) cook healthy, traditional Indian food that is incredibly tasty to our American palates. Meet 71-year-old Radhamani Amma who can drive a bulldozer and 10 other vehicles. We have visited some nice Indian restaurants, but none of them have food that tastes quite as fresh and healthy as Amma’s. The personal pronoun ti means '(informal singular) you'. We have noticed we cannot find anything like it in the US. the word Nonna is a feminine noun that means 'Grandma, Grandmother'.
We love our Amma and we love our Amma’s Indian cooking - she makes all kinds of Indian food from scratch and it seems like she is always cooking. However, in our family in the US, we call our mother “Mom” and “Amma” is what we call our dear grandmother. In many parts of India, “Amma” means mother.
